A recent trend among mainline, Christian churches is people actively participating in worship, ministries and events of a congregation, but choosing not to join in an official way. Another common experience among congregations that have traditions of 4 – 6 week new member classes is the difficulty in scheduling such sessions.
My concern: When people choose to join a congregation, I think it is an opportune time to meet their curiosity with what Lutherans have to offer; that is, a rather different perspective on the Christian faith than many have ever experienced. One that I found surprising, meaningful and life – giving in my 20’s when I worked for Nabisco Biscuit Co. as a purchasing agent.
In talking this over with a pastor in Houston while on vacation this past June, I discovered their response to the scheduling difficulty. They offer a ½ day class on a Saturday, and people are willing to commit to setting aside a Saturday, rather than a month of short one – hour sessions. So I’m borrowing this model. On Saturday, October 18, 9am – 2pm, Tim and I will teach newcomers to the congregation about the Lutheran tradition and the ministries of Saint Matthew, and the wider church. We’ll see how it works.
Next, Evangelism suggested trying something new – instead of a potluck lunch or dinner for new members – why not hold a brunch in between services on the day that they join? The congregation can bring breakfast items and we will have an in-formal conversation in between the services (during adult forum) in order to get to know them a bit better. A Brunch Reception will be held on Sunday, October 26th at 9:45am.
Also, we plan to hold new member classes on 2 festival Sundays each year: This year, we plan for Reformation Sunday, 10/26 and Pentecost Sunday 5/24/2015.
Something borrowed – something new: Not an unfamiliar way to begin an official relationship with new, beloved people of God!

Brunch Reception for New Members
Sunday, Oct. 26, 9:45 in the Library
The congregation is cordially invited to help meet and greet our new members on Oct. 26th. In lieu of the Adult Forum, we will have a brunch in the library at 9:45am. This will give both the 8:30 and 11am attendees the opportunity to welcome our new members. There will be a sign-up sheet in the foyer for contributions of: breakfast breads, bagels, breakfast casseroles, or fruit. Hot and cold beverages will be provided.
