Weekly Devotions for 5/9

7 The law of the LORD is perfect,

reviving the soul;

the decrees of the LORD are sure,

making wise the simple;

8 the precepts of the LORD are right,

rejoicing the heart;

the commandment of the LORD is clear,

enlightening the eyes;

9 the fear of the LORD is pure,

enduring forever;

the ordinances of the LORD are true

and righteous altogether.

10 More to be desired are they than gold,

even much fine gold;

sweeter also than honey

and drippings of the honeycomb. Psalm 19:7-10 (NRSVUE)

Oh the adventures of a kitten. Our youngest cat, Frankie, is about 17 months old so technically an adult, but she still has full kitten energy. Every day is a series of adventures, from gazing longingly at our aquarium in hopes that a fish might happen to jump out to intense moments of tail-chasing. The biggest prize in a day, though, is being able to sneak into Cade’s room and under his bed. Cade is sure that she is trying to chew on wires in there, so he does everything he can to keep her out. Every day, then, becomes a game to her of trying to figure out the challenge of how to get into that room. No matter where in the house she is or what she is doing, if someone other than Cade opens that door she immediately sprints towards it. She has figured out that if Cade goes in he might not come back out for a while. If someone else enters, though, they usually come back out in a few moments. If she is ready, she can make a break for it when the door opens again, hopefully shooting past whoever is coming out. Most of the time it doesn’t work, but sometimes it does, making her day a triumphant one.

Can you imagine being so desirous of something? What would it be like to be so attuned to that one goal that you could hear that particular door open from anywhere in a large house? The bible attests that we are to desire God with our whole heart; perhaps even with the reckless abandon of a kitten trying to get through a forbidden door. As Psalm 19 says, the ways of God are to be desired more than wealth or fine foods. What might it feel like to have that level of excitement to seek God? Can you imagine thinking your day is a triumphant one because you found time to pray? I’m not sure if I’ve ever aspired to that level of excitement for God, let alone come close to attaining it. Yet how wonderful it would be to be content with such a life.
