‘Twas the Last Day of Sunday School
By Lorraine Horton, who shared this at the
Teacher & Staff Appreciation Gathering
An adaptation of Clement Moore’s The Night Before Christmas
‘Twas the last day of Sunday School,
When all through halls,
Everything was cleared off,
Even the walls.
Bill has run a check to see what had been done
He’s smiling, so in his book, you’re number one!
The Bibles were collected
And put away with care.
The glue sticks and scissors
I closeted upstairs.
This summer the children will play in pools,
Under the watchful eyes of parents and lord.
The songs and lessons you taught
Have left a small mark
And will travel with them from playground to park.
Preparing your classroom
And reviewing those plans was not done In vein, and
Was rewarding in ways that are hard to explain.
Now put on your flip-flops and find a lawn chair,
maybe read a book or let down your hair.
You’re entitled to rest, entitled to fun.
Saint Matthew thanks you for a job well done!
Twelve years ago, the news wasn’t good for our world. Terrorism rattled our country to its foundation. The global economic slowdown was just beginning. The big picture looked pretty dismal. Twelve years ago, Chip Thomas, made the decision to teach Sunday Church School. He was inspired to bring the Good News to kids. Chip has worked with small groups of students, in a small church in a small state, nurturing the big ideas of our Christian faith. His efforts will be missed, but they are deeply appreciated. Thank you, Chip! -Lorraine Horton
