SOCIAL MINISTRY

Greetings Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I cannot believe another month has passed in this crazy time of coronavirus. I hope you are well. We are looking for a volunteer to be SMLC Ambassador to Lutheran World Relief. This individual will be our contact for LWR-related news and events. If you are interested, please send me an email at denisemcole@earthlink.net.

We had two lively discussions in October about Anti-Racism. On Oct. 6 Max Frable hosted a discussion about a video we watched together and on Oct. 20, Brian Lestini presented Environmental Justice & Compassionate Voting. It’s exciting to see how our work in one area can have such a positive impact in other ministries and areas of our lives.

On Nov. 3, 7PM, first, we will have our first workshop about Anti-Racism called, “Freed in Christ: Race, Ethnicity and Culture – A Conversation on Race, Ethnicity and Culture.” The series is divided into six to eight meetings where a course designed by the ELCA will be used to explore and challenge our individual and church perceptions and responses to race, ethnicity and culture. The sessions contain small and large group activities, discussions and homework that will be used in the later part of the program. This small group of attendees has committed to attend the entire program, meeting the first Tuesday of each month for about an hour. If you would like to participate in all of these sessions please reach out to me.

The next monthly meeting will be on Nov. 17, 7PM. It is a general discussion and planning session and all are welcome. I’m happy to send you the link at your request. Click here to learn more about what the ELCA has to offer on this subject. https://elca.org/racialjusticepledge.
