Remembering a Pastor’s Wife

We learned recently of the death of Jean A. Uehling, 97, wife of former pastor Carl T. Uehling. Born in Sunbury, PA, the daughter of a Lutheran pastor, she passed on April 14 at the Lutheran Community at Telford in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Following Pastor Uehling’s retirement, they had lived on her family’s much loved farm in western Pennsylvania where they had regularly vacationed. When his health declined, they moved to Telford to be nearer their four sons Carl, Mark, John and Earl and their wives and families including nine grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. After Pastor Uehling’s death in 2016, Jean continued to live in The Lutheran Community and enjoyed their many activities.

Pastor Uehling was called to Saint Matthew Church in 1978, following Pastor Jensen’s election as President (later Bishop) of the NJ Synod of the LCA (later ELCA). He had been serving as one of the editors of The Lutheran magazine after pastoring other Lutheran churches.

People in our congregation remember Jean as a friendly and supportive wife who had a good sense of humor and a kind listening ear. She enjoyed singing in our church choir as well as being actively involved in our church community. In addition she taught over 20 years in elementary schools in the Philadelphia School District.

Funeral services were held on April 20 in the Lutheran Rose Chapel of the Lutheran Community at Telford, followed by interment in St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery in Telford. Condolences may be sent to the Uehling family c/o Sadler-Suess Funeral Home, 33 N.
