As part of the Season of Creation, St. Matthew will begin using a new (new to us) liturgical setting: Mass of Creation by Marty Haugen. This beloved setting is known for its singable melodies and rich spiritual tone. To help everyone feel confident and ready to participate, we invite you to listen to the service music in advance. Let’s prepare to sing with joy and unity as we enter this new season of worship together.
Glory to God
Alleluia
Holy, Holy
Lamb of God
Composed by Marty Haugen, “Mass of Creation” stands as one of the most recognizable and widely utilized Mass settings in the English-speaking Catholic world.[1] Since its publication, it has become a staple in parishes across the United States and internationally, celebrated for its adaptability and familiar, accessible melodies that encourage congregational participation.[1][2]
Originally written for a traditional SATB choir with organ accompaniment, one of the setting’s greatest strengths is its versatility.[1] The composition is intentionally flexible, allowing for performances by various ensembles, whether a large choir with brass, timpani, and handbells, or a smaller, more contemporary group using guitar, piano, and woodwinds.[1] This adaptability ensures that parishes with different musical resources can effectively incorporate it into their liturgies.[1]
The enduring popularity of “Mass of Creation” was highlighted when portions of the setting were chosen for the Papal Mass celebrated in Washington D.C. on April 17, 2008.[2] Haugen later revised the setting to align with the 2010 Revised Order of Mass, ensuring its continued relevance and use in contemporary worship.[2] This revision allowed the beloved composition to remain an integral part of the liturgical life for countless Catholics. Today, “Mass of Creation” is hailed as an exemplary setting suitable for both traditional and modern worship styles.
