Join DEI July 6: “History of Racism” Video, Discussion & Goodies

On July 6th, grab some goodies and join us after 9:30am Worship in the library.

We’ll continue to view the video entitled “History of Racism in America”, led by Jeffrey Robinson, a lawyer representing the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. Well documented facts show the abuse of power by white leaders. The abuse extends beyond blacks to Native Americans and beyond. It’s a sobering video but important information to acknowledge.

About the film “History of Racism in America”

“Who We Are: A Chronicle of Racism in America” is a documentary film featuring Jeffery Robinson, founder of The Who We Are Project and former ACLU Deputy Legal Director. The film is anchored by Robinson’s 2018 Town Hall performance in New York and interweaves lecture, personal anecdotes, interviews, and historical footage to present a timeline of anti-Black racism in the United States, from slavery to the present day. Robinson’s journey to creating the presentation and film began in 2011 when he started raising his nephew and grappled with how to discuss racism in America with him. Directed by Emily and Sarah Kunstler, the film explores the enduring legacy of white supremacy and our collective responsibility to overcome it, aiming to correct the narrative about the United States’ history of anti-Black racism. It has received numerous awards, including the Audience Award at the SXSW Film Festival, and is available for streaming on various digital platforms and for purchase on DVD and Blu-Ray.

New Edition of “Dismantling the Racism Machine” Offers Updated Tools and Manual for Understanding and Combating Systemic Racism

The newly released second edition of “Dismantling the Racism Machine: A Manual and Toolbox (2025)” by Karen Gaffney aims to provide students and general readers with a foundational understanding of the history of race and racism in the U.S., information often omitted from traditional education. This accessible, interdisciplinary guide, grounded in critical race theory, uses the metaphor of a “Racism Machine” to explain race as a social construct and racism as a system of oppression. The book debunks common false ideologies, such as race being biological or systemic racism being a thing of the past. It functions as both a manual, offering clear instructions for understanding how a racial hierarchy was created and maintained, and a toolbox, providing concrete action steps for readers to address racism in the current era. The updated edition also incorporates recent events and policies, offering additional resources for those impacted by white supremacy.
