This week we remember and pray for all those affected by Hurricane Sandy one year ago. From the Caribbean to the North Atlantic Coast, millions of lives were impacted — maybe someone you know, maybe you. We walk with you and others that are working to rebuild not just homes, but lives.
We are a church that rolls up our sleeves and gets to work. Our work in times of disasters extends far beyond the news cycle. In Maryland, New Jersey and New York, we continue to be present through the coordination and support of volunteer groups, case workers advocating and connecting people to the assistance they need and construction management of rebuilding homes. Committees have been formed to help address the long-term needs of community members. In Cuba and Haiti, we were able to respond with immediate care of food, shelter, water and helped to minimize the risk of a cholera outbreak. Hurricane Sandy: One Year Later gives a more detailed look of our response and the long-term work being done, on the ground.
We are bringing help, hope and healing to neighbors in their time of need.
Sincerely,
The Rev. Daniel Rift
Director, ELCA World Hunger and Disaster Appeal
