It’s not easy being green. And I’m not talking about being a frog; but rather, thinking about the “carbon footprint” that Saint Matthew leaves each year. We are stewards of God’s creation– human and earth, and it can be quite meaningful to think about how we might serve our current and future neighbors through our actions, having “dominion” over our little patch of earth.
I am pretty passionate and find much meaning in thinking about our impact on the environment. And I don’t think I’m alone in this. So, the Stewardship Committee is looking for a person or two to help coordinate an effort.
A few possible ideas:
- Set up more recycling cans around the facilities as encouragement
- Develop a policy on bottled water purchased by the congregation for events
- Use Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs where possible (Oops – already being done, thanks to the Property committee!)
- Offer a bin in the foyer for recycling batteries
The purpose is not to become strident or legalistic, but simply to reflect upon our congregational footprint and see where our care for the neighbor & earth might lead us. Please contact Jack Horton (Stewardship Chair) or me if you feel called to this.
