Why give blood?
Every two seconds, someone in the United States needs blood. Your single donation can potentially save up to three lives. Hospitals rely on volunteer blood donors to provide critical care to patients facing surgeries, cancer treatments, traumatic injuries, and more. By donating, you become a hero to those in need.
Important Donor Guidelines
- Eligibility: Generally, donors must be in good health, weigh at least 110 pounds, and be 17 years or older (16 with parental consent in some states).
- Hydration: Drink plenty of fluids before and after your donation.
- Identification: Bring a valid photo ID.
- Iron-Rich Meal: Eat a healthy, iron-rich meal prior to donating.
- Medications: Certain medications may affect eligibility. Please visit the Red Cross website or call 1-800-RED-CROSS for specific questions.
- Time Commitment: The entire process, from registration to post-donation refreshments, typically takes about an hour.
