A heartfelt thank you for all the amazing work you did.
Nearly 50 volunteers packed some 2,500 bags of fresh locally grown produce for distribution to area families for Thanksgiving, including 150 bags that collectively were delivered to the food pantries at Bridge of Peace Church in Camden, and Prince of Peace Church in Marlton.
- In New Jersey, nearly 1 in 10, or 800,000 people, face food insecurity, including more than 190,000 children, and 25,000 people in Burlington County.
- More than 1.3 million New Jerseyans live in a food desert, which is defined as a community where the public lacks adequate access to supermarkets and other nutritious food sources. Camden is one of 50 communities designated as a food desert in
New Jersey, and has some of the worst conditions in the state.
Yet at the same time, 1 of every 3 bites of food produced is wasted, totaling 1.3 billion tons every year. This mismatch not only con- tributes to food insecurity, but also carries a heavy environmental toll, since food production accounts for more greenhouse gas emissions than every country in the world except for The United States and China
By your work, you helped directly address these dual problems of lack of access to healthy foods, and the environmental cost of food waste.
