Director of Music Position Opening

St. Matthew Lutheran Church (ELCA) is seeking a part-time (20 hrs) Director of Music/Organist to help continue a long tradition of excellence in worship and music. We are looking to continue to develop our music programming keeping this vital ministry vibrant and meaningful. In addition to serving as the organist for all worship services, the Director of Music/Organist directs the Adult and Handbell Choirs and collaborates with the pastor in worship and special music planning.

Responsibilities also include:

  1. Coordinate all musical activities and special events including alternate styles and new worship directions.
  1. Direct the Adult Choir in all musical offerings at regular worship services and special events. Direct the handbell choirs and plan programs to be presented on designated Sundays and special services. Conduct regular scheduled rehearsals (usually weekly) to include vocal warm-ups, choral techniques, and the teaching of new music.
  1. Organize and maintain a complete choral library and ensure compliance with all copyright laws governing the use of music in worship and for broadcast. Submit weekly music selections to OneLicense for print and streaming rights.
  1. Encourage, plan and obtain supplemental vocalists and instrumentalists, as budget allows, for specific services in conjunction with the Worship Committee.
  1. Continually maintain his/her proficiency in the field of Church Music, (preferably that of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America).
  1. In conjunction with the Worship Committee, monitor and maintain all church musical instruments including sanctuary organ and piano (Yamaha GC-1 Artist Series), 2 additional pianos, electric keyboard, 3 Octave Schulmerich Handbells, 3 Octave Malmark chimes, 2 Djembe drums.
  1. Provide the leadership, teaching, interpersonal skills and recruiting skills necessary to maintain and expand the church choirs and musical programs.
  1. Participate in monthly Worship Committee meetings.

The successful candidate will have gifts in leading the liturgy and congregational hymn-singing and working with musicians of all ages and skill levels, in addition to good interpersonal skills. They should possess at least a bachelor’s degree in music from an accredited institution of music or equivalent. The Director must be accomplished as an organist and pianist and have prior experience as Choir Director. Extensive knowledge of Christian musical traditions is required. Experience with basic audio technology systems is a plus.
