Please join us for our adult forum class on Sunday mornings at 9:45am. During the month of January,The Rev. Dr. Timothy Wengert will present a series entitled Christians in the World: A Lutheran Perspective.
Participants will discover (or rediscover) the joys of the Lutheran perspective on life in this world. We will examine the difference between this world and the world to come, the real meaning of good works and the nature of God’s callings for us in this life.
- January 3: “God Has Two Hands!”
Lutherans carefully distinguish God’s work in the created world from God’s work bringing in the New World through the gospel. Here we will learn how this distinction can save us from thinking Christians should conquer the world or flee from it. Instead, all “good works” are not burdens for us to fulfill but a spontaneous blossoming of faith, true gifts of the Holy Spirit. - January 10: “Christian Callings in the Household and at Work.”
Sometimes people look for special, “Christian” works that please God, when in fact our daily life is our Christian life. God calls us to serve our neighbor where we are—not to merit a reward but to reflect our thankfulness. - January 17: “Christian Callings in Society and Politics.”
Sometimes Christians think their job is to “Christianize” society or to escape from it and establish separate communities of “genuine” Christians. God’s two hands save us from this and send us into the wider world to serve all human beings—giving our “reverent best guess” for determining how best to do it. - January 24: “Christian Callings and the Church’s Gospel.”
Christian live with one foot squarely planted in this world and one foot trusting in God’s promise of a world to come. That world breaks in on us whenever and wherever two or three gather in Christ’s name.
