Book Group Discussion

“Dear Church” Book Study: Wed. Oct. 28, 7PM via Zoom

Discussion led by The Rev. Peggy Marks

“Dear Church” by Lenny Duncan It’s subtitle is: “A Love Letter from a Black Preacher to the Whitest Denomination in the US.” Lenny Duncan is an unlikely pastor. Formerly incarcerated, formerly homeless and formerly unchurched, he is now a black preacher in the Whitest denomination in the United States: the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Shifting demographics and shrinking congregations make the headlines, but Duncan connects the church’s lack of diversity to its lack of vitality. Part manifesto, part confession and all love letter, Dear Church offers a bold vision for the future of the church.

The book is available on Amazon.com. Even if you choose not to read the book, I invite you to join with others here at St. Matthew as we look at the issues around Racism in our society and communities and churches. This book fits in so well with the in-depth study and discussion of Freed in Christ: Race, Ethnicity and Culture. An ELCA Social Statement which we will begin to study on October 6th. An offer: Were you interested in reading our first book “Dear Martin,” but just didn’t get around to buying it? Several of us are very willing to pass it forward and share our book with you. Just let me know: peggy_marks@comcast.net

Blessings and peace,
