BISHOP’S CHALLENGE ~ Jehu Jones Mission

In coming months, you will begin hearing more about the Jehu Jones Mission, the 2021-2022 New Jersey Synod’s Bishop’s Challenge. Rev. Jehu Jones was the first Black Lutheran pastor in the U.S., ordained in 1832. He purchased two plots in Philadelphia—at $375 each—for a building for his growing black congregation. Jones lost the mortgage after his Synod refused to rescue the project. During the next several months there will be opportunities to learn more about Jones. There is also a challenge to congregations to donate at least $375. All funds raised will support educational opportunities for emerging leaders of African descent, including internships, camp, and international travel and will be administered through the NJ Synod. An offering will be taken at Pastor Eric’s installation service on September 21 to support this effort. For more information, see the website at: https://www.njsynod.org/bishopschallenge.
