April 16th 2024 is the 74th anniversary of Saint Matthew

FROM THE ARCHIVIST

Rozella Bower

The date was Sunday, April 16, 1950. Quite a group of people were entering the Moorestown Community House. A passer by might wonder why these people were not only  entering the building, but were quite animated as they talked and laughed together. It was no wonder those people were so happy. They were going to attend the organizational meeting for the beginning of a new church in Moorestown, NJ – Saint Matthew Evangelical Lutheran Church. It was   indeed a memorable day.

April 16th of this year will mark the 74th anniversary of this church. Since that day of organization the congregation has observed special anniversaries according to church records, including the 30th and 40th. The 50th anniversary happened to be on Palm Sunday. Pastor Huff suggested we have a procession from the Community House to the church, which included  many people in a grand celebration. For the 60th anniversary, a luncheon was held at the Community House to celebrate. There was no special celebration on the 70th because it was suggested that we wait until the 75th, which, of course, will be next year. Watch for something special on or near that time.
