Green Team Update

Summer Gleaning Event

Please consider joining us Saturday, June 15 (9 AM), for a summer gleaning event with our Local Mission partner, New Jersey Farmers Against Hunger. Last year 15 volunteers, including confirmands and mentors, had a great time picking over 65 pounds of strawberries for distribution to local food banks. This year’s event is again planned for Specca Farms in Springfield; final location will be confirmed depending on crop availability.

Crops to be gleaned may include strawberries, spinach, or perhaps other leafy greens. All parishioners and friends including families with children are welcome! Also, this is a great opportunity for parents and mentors with a confirmand in need of a service project. To sign up, please RSVP to Brian Lestini.

Next Meeting: August

Our monthly meetings will resume in August, where we will be continuing ongoing programs such as Meatless Monday, Adult Forum, Sunday school, sustainability plan, and also planning a few surprises for the upcoming year. For the latest Green Team happenings, be sure to visit our website and Facebook page for information or to sign up for the team. We’re always looking for new members to join us!

Eco-Tip of the Month:

As much as forty percent of the energy used in the food system goes towards the production of chemical fertilizers and pesticides (Sustainable Table). Can’t afford to eat everything organically? Start small by choosing organic for these ‘Dirty Dozen’ fruits and vegetables that are more prone to carry residual chemicals:

  • peaches
  • apples
  • bell pepper
  • celery
  • nectarine
  • strawberries
  • cherries
  • kale
  • lettuce
  • grapes (imported)
  • carrot
  • pears
