Stephen Ministry: Empathy Enriches Our Lives

Stephen Ministry skills are fortified monthly through Continuing Education. Recently, we discussed David Brooks’ “The Art of Empathy.” Empathy is the ability to understand a person from their point of view. We can strengthen our empathy through several practices:

  • Encourage hostile groups to work together as equals on common goals.
  • Closely observe people to widen your perspective on why they act.
  • Read biographies to vicariously experience the emotional lives of others.
  • Give yourself “permission to feel.” Exercising emotions has a positive effect on those around you.
  • Use your own dark moments to connect with and understand others.

If you would like to talk with a Stephen Minister, contact Sue Kuhn or Pastor Trozzo. Our next meeting is March 25.
