Our new Gardening Ministry is still growing — and we’d love your help.
This ministry is a partnership with the Center for Conscious Living, which is responsible for maintaining the garden beds. Together, we focus on the front gardens, edge plantings along the building, the Garden of Remembrance, and the Pollinator Garden. The Ministry is co-chaired by Kim Villani and Janine Blunt. Their contact information is on the large bulletin board.
Why this ministry matters
Caring for the grounds around Saint Matthew is more than curb appeal. Pollinator populations — bees, butterflies, and moths — have declined sharply across New Jersey in the past two decades, and small patches of native plantings make a meaningful difference. Our Pollinator Garden is designed to give bees and Monarch butterflies a reliable place to feed and rest as they move through Moorestown. The Garden of Remembrance is a quiet space where members can pause and pray. The front gardens and edge plantings are the first thing visitors see when they arrive on Sunday morning — a welcome without words.
Our partnership with the Center for Conscious Living means the ministry has expert support on plant selection, seasonal care, and organic maintenance practices — so volunteers don’t need any gardening experience to jump in. If you can pull a weed, water a bed, or spread a bag of mulch, you can help. Tools are on-site, and there’s always someone happy to show a first-timer the ropes.

What a season of work looks like
Gardening work runs year-round, but the rhythm shifts with the seasons. Spring is for cleanup, cutting back last year’s growth, dividing perennials, and mulching. Summer is mostly weeding, watering, and deadheading spent blooms — light work that’s easy to fit into an hour. Fall means planting bulbs for spring color and putting the beds to rest. Even in winter, there’s planning to do: seed catalogs to browse, next year’s plantings to sketch out.
We Will Need Your Help!
To help care for our property, we need volunteers to commit to one hour at a time throughout the year. Currently, a group meets on Tuesday and Friday mornings. During the summer, meeting times may vary depending on the weather. If you are unavailable on Tuesday or Friday mornings but would still like to help, please contact Kim Villani. Work can also be done at other times.
